2011 Branch Dinner
The Branch Dinner was a wonderful success this year when 60 members met at the Club House at Caldecott Hall.  The meal was excellent and the after dinner entertainment was second to none!  The Loddon Ringers entertained us with music by David playing an accordion, a poem written by Anne, a shortened pantomime and community singing.  Such talent at one tower, and nobody knew about it!  Below are a few photographs showing just some of those who attended the evening.

GREAT YARMOUTH MINSTER

On Friday 9th December the Annual Civic Carol Service was held at Great Yarmouth.  This year the service, led by the Rt Revd Graham James, the Lord Bishop of Norwich, became a very important historic event as it was also the “Inauguration of the Priory and Parish Church of Saint Nicholas as a Minster.
Ringing for such a once in a lifetime event was an honour and I would like to sincerely thank all who made the journey to Yarmouth to help us out. Those ringing for the service were: David Webb, Stephen Rabong,
Patrick Snell, Richard Salisbury, Peter Bates, Michael Stokes, Lawrence Hassall, Norman Cossey, Verity McGlashan, and from St Nicholas: Brenda Taylor, Ann & David Womack, Ray & Bel Rivers.

Martham bells ring out for the man who found the West Runton Elephant

The bells at St Mary’s Martham were rung twice recently to celebrate the life of Harold Hems, who died in January, aged 90.

Harold achieved local fame when he and his wife, Margaret, found the West Runton Elephant in 1995.  A storm had eroded the cliff edge on the beach and a pelvic bone was partly exposed.  The couple helped with the subsequent excavation and Harold gave regular talks to people who gathered to watch.

Always a keen naturalist, Harold was a founding member of the Zoological Photographic Society as well as a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.  His wildlife photographs were critically acclaimed and some of his photographs of local birds and animals are now kept at the Museum of the Broads at Stalham.
Harold served in the 113th Special Wireless Section of the Royal Corps of Signals during the war, seeing action in North Africa and Italy before moving into Austria.  On returning to England in 1946, he trained to be a teacher, and in 1959 moved from his native Sheffield to West Runton on the North Norfolk coast. Harold was head of Maths at Cromer Secondary Modern School until 1981.  He leaves his wife, three children and six grandchildren.

A quarter peal of 1260 changes of Plain Bob Minor was rung for Harold on 11 January on St Mary’s bells. The ringers were Eric Brunger, Jenny Brunger, Edward Hems (grandson), Kenny Frostwick, Michael Hems (grandson) and Richard Hems (son) who conducted the quarter.

A second quarter peal of 1320 changes of Bourne Surprise Minor was rung for Harold on 21 January at St Mary’s.  The ringers were Nicola Hems (daughter in law), Jenny Brunger, Richard Hems (son), Verity McGlashan, Kenny Frostwick (conductor) and Chris Harrison.
